"Your files are too powerful" is probably the message Discord users see most often. The annoying part is that the limit is not one number: it depends on both your account plan and the boost level of the server you are posting in, whichever is more generous. Here is how it actually works as of August 2026.

Limits by plan

This is a per-file limit, not a per-message total. A single message can carry up to 10 attachments, each of which must stay under the limit on its own; there is no separate cap on the sum.

How Server Boost changes things

A Server Boost raises the upload ceiling inside that server, and the higher of the two values wins:

The boost only applies inside that server. You can post a 100 MB clip in a level 3 community and still get blocked at 20 MB sending the same file in a DM.

If the destination server is boosted, put 50 or 100 into the custom size field in FitSize instead of forcing everything down to 20 MB. You keep noticeably more quality.

How the limit has changed

• Before 2022: 8 MB for free accounts. Most older tutorials stop here.
• 2022: raised to 25 MB, then rolled back to 8 MB the same year.
• 2023: settled at 25 MB.
• 2024: adjusted to 10 MB, and the three-tier structure with Nitro Basic at 50 MB and Nitro at 500 MB became final.
• April 2026: free accounts raised to 20 MB, which is where things stand now.

That churn is exactly why search results contradict each other. A quick way to date an article: if it never mentions Nitro Basic, it is from 2023 or earlier.

Five ways past the limit

1. Compress the file

The path of least resistance. Lower the video bitrate or the image quality and most files land under the limit while still looking fine. 2. Trim the clip

3. Link to external storage

Google Drive, Dropbox or Catbox will host anything and you paste a link. The downside is an extra click for the recipient, and links rot, the message history becomes less useful over time.

4. Boost the server

For a community you use daily, reaching level 2 gives everyone 50 MB, which is cheaper than each member buying Nitro. It only fixes that one server though.

5. Upgrade to Nitro

Worth it only if you send large files regularly. Nitro Basic at 50 MB covers screenshots and short clips comfortably; the 500 MB tier is mostly for video creators.

Common misconceptions

• "Zip it to get around the limit": no. Video and JPEG are already compressed, so a ZIP saves almost nothing.
• "The mobile app has a smaller limit": it does not. The limit is per account and per server, never per device.
• "The recipient needs Nitro to download big files": they do not. Only the uploader is capped.
• "Emoji and stickers share the same limit": they do not. Custom emoji have their own size rules (typically 256 KB), unrelated to attachments.

Frequently asked questions

How large a file can a free Discord account upload?

20 MB per file. That took effect in April 2026; before then it was 10 MB. If a guide tells you the limit is 8 MB, it predates 2022 and is out of date.

Do Server Boosts raise my upload limit?

Yes, but only inside that one server. Boost level 2 raises the per-file limit to 50 MB and level 3 raises it to 100 MB. Direct messages and unboosted servers still use your account plan.

I have Nitro, so why can my friend not receive the file?

The limit applies to the uploader, not the recipient. With Nitro you can send 500 MB and a free account can still download it. The reverse is also true, files they send you are capped by their plan.

Can I get around the limit by renaming the file or zipping it?

No. Discord checks the actual byte size, not the extension. Zipping a 25 MB video usually still leaves you at roughly 24 MB, because video is already a compressed format with almost nothing left to squeeze.
